§ Expected to expand market share by developing a new segment
Developed under the project name of J100, SsangYong Motor has revealed its all new car is to be called the TORRES, and released teaser images and a video ahead of its official launch.
Spectacularly rugged and encompassing mountains, glaciers, lakes and rivers, the Torres del Fine National Park is designated a UNESCO Biodiversity Conservation Area and described as the last spectacular place on the earth. Located in Patagonia in Southern Chile, it is one the world’s Top 10 paradises remaining.
The name of the new car is designed to embody the sense of adventure, challenge and escapism, and represents the freedom to explore. The design of TORRES evokes the natural look of one of the world’s great wonders with its vast and natural biodiversity.
The new images tease the exterior look of the car, the first to result from SsangYong's new design vision and philosophy, ‘Powered by Toughness’. Tough yet contemporary in style, it draws heavily on the brands distinctive and authentic design heritage, differentiating the new car from other ‘look alike’ SUVs.
The front aspect of the new TORRES features a vertical style radiator grille giving the sense of a tough and rugged appearance, while the rear tailgate includes what looks like a spare wheel carrier to give that authentic off-roader character.
Together with its robust and tough look, TORRES offers the space utilisation and a number of features to make it ideal for outdoor leisure activities such as camping and exploring. As South Korea’s only SUV specialist, SsangYong continues to differentiate its products as traditional SUVs from more urban ‘soft roaders’.
A spokesperson for SsangYong Motor commented: "The SUV market continues to expand and subdivide, and with TORRES we are filling the gap between semi/medium-sized SUVs such as Korando and larger D/E-segment cars like Rexton. This move to create an additional segment in the market will open up new opportunities for us, especially as we further develop the product offering and continue to add value and originality.”
TORRES is scheduled to go into mass production with pre-order sales commencing in June for the domestic market, with export sales to follow its launch in most regions except Europe in September. For the European market, EV version of TORRES (Project name: U100) will be introduced at the end of next year.
A teaser video called ‘The Rising of TORRES’ has been released to mark the car’s pre-launch, and features the vast wilderness of the Patagonian mountains and the Torres del Fine National Park.
The teaser video is available on the SsangYong Motor website (www.kg-mobility.com) and official YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/user/SsangYongMotor). <Ends>
