SsangYong Motor has revealed its All New Rexton (Export name: Rexton) through the ‘All New Rexton Online Showcase’, a first for a Korean car brand.
The new Rexton, which has been completely reimagined with a new exterior and interior design, a new powertrain and advanced driving assistance systems, is expected to sell well thanks to the new improvements.
The ‘All New Rexton Online Showcase’ with Lim Young Woong took place on 4thNovember on SsangYong Motor's official YouTube channel, and was also broadcasted via the Naver Automobile page.
Design & Practicality
The new Rexton has been praised for its new design, which was revealed in advance of the launch via pre-contact with potential customers in Korea. Characterised by the dignified presence of an authentic SUV but with an elegant urban style, the front look of the new Rexton has a layered structure, harmonising the radiator grille and dual projection full LED headlamps.
With its overall bold dimensions and robust design, the diamond-shaped radiator grille signals the beginning of a new look, while the T-shaped LED rear lights and dual tail pipe garnish complete the tone of a sophisticated and fashionable design with a sense of unity.
Inside the look is improved with a new seat pattern for the second row of seats and door trim, a 4-spoke D-cut steering wheel with double diamond stitching adding a sporty image, and there is a newly designed overhead console with high-gloss finish and touch type switches for added convenience and a premium look.
The second row of seats now offers greater comfort with larger bases and higher bolsters, while the tilt angle can be adjusted back by up to 139-degrees (Best in class in Korea) in order to provide the highest level of passenger comfort. With the rear seats in position, Rexton provides 784 litres (VDA standard) of cargo space, easily accommodating four large golf bags positioned sideways, and with the second row folded, a load area expanded to 1,977 litres of space.
The newly designed centre console now features a vertical cup holder with a cover to make the space more useable, while in the second row, passengers get a 12V power outlet as well as two USB ports to allow easy use of mobile devices on the move.
The full-colour digital instrument cluster has been increased in size to 12.3-inches, and displays all the essential information as well as navigation maps and AVN content for driving comfort, and can be changed to one of three theme modes according to preference.
Driving & Safety
With an increase of 15ps and 2.0 kg∙m, the new engine produces 202ps and a maximum torque of 45.0 kg∙m, while also delivering a maximum torque between 1,600 - 2,600rpm at normal driving speed.
The car is also equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission, which combined with the powerful new engine delivers both improved efficiency compared with the previous 7-speed gearbox, but also has a more gentle feel when shifting gear and reduced noise, while the wide gear ratio maintains RPM efficiency.
An advanced ‘shift-by-wire’ lever-type electronic gear changing system known for its ease of operation has been chosen by SsangYong for the first time. If the engine is turned off, the transmission automatically switches to ‘Park’, while an unlock switch is included to eliminate concerns about malfunction.
New Rexton boasts excellent driving stability and ride quality thanks to its new rack type steering system (R-EPS), another first for SsangYong. It also comes with a locking differential, found on the Musso, which gives the vehicle enhanced off-road driving performance, particularly when undertaking leisure activities such as towing a boat trailer or launching into water, and gives Rexton a best-in-class towing capability in 4WD mode.
The car is also fitted with a Trailer Sway Control function which senses any swaying movement of the trailer when being towed at speed, and controls the driving force and brakes, to ensure the situation is recovered safely.
When it comes to safety, Rexton includes Deep Control safety technologies including IACC, a 4-layered quad frame body, nine airbags with driver’s knee airbag and seat-belt reminder for all seats to ensure optimum safety.
IACC ensures the car maintains speed and a safe distance from the vehicle in front and offers stable driving assistance both on motorways and other roads. Blind Spot-detection Warning warns the driver of any vehicles in the rear blind spots, while Blind Spot collision Alert helps to prevent accidents by keeping the car in its original lane.
Technology & Convenience
360 degree vision in 3D is achieved using four cameras to show the area surrounding the car, and offers the driver a safe view with three different screen images: Standard, Wide and Full. This can be rotated 360 degrees to check the surrounding area when maneuvering.
The Rear Cabin Talk function is designed to ensure relaxed communication between the front and rear seats occupants. Those sitting in the rear seats can more easily hear the driver speaking via in-built microphones, who’s voice is then played through the rear speakers which can also be muted when the passenger wishes to sleep. Multi-pairing via Bluetooth to connect two devices is also included.
Following its launch in Korea, the new Rexton will go on sale internationally soon.
